Carbon - a wonder element

Sixth in the periodic table,

With valence electrons four -

Unless a molecule, quite unstable

Can form compounds galore!

In cyclohexane, twelve intrinsic,

Six form benzene;

Sixty, no less, to form the majestic

Buckminster Fullerene!

The sweet tooth is who knows

It in the mood-lifters - sugars!

Glucose, fructose, sucrose - 

All effective Monday-blue dispellers! 

The element which does form

Even the layers of human skin,

Is essential, even in fuel for

Running the human engine.

Graphite, a friend of every child,

And channel to imagination;

Nanotubes, throwing doors open wide

To scientific innovation!

Coal, at normal temperature - 

All machinery it fuels

At higher and constant pressure,

'Tis the diamond - King of jewels!

It's constructed the world we know today

This substance omnipresent - 

Versatile in every way

Is CARBON - THE WONDER ELEMENT.
